Richard F. “Dick” Kassner, 90 of Jefferson, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at his home.
Dick was born on June 10, 1935, in Stangelville, WI, and was the youngest child of Stanley and Mary (Meyer) Kassner. He attended school in the Kewaunee School District before moving to Fort Atkinson in 1953 at the age of 17. He married Darline Brown, and together they had two children before the marriage ended. He later met JoAnn Higgins at the Wayside Inn, where she worked as a waitress. The two eloped and were married on May 1, 1969, in Phoenix, Arizona. Dick and JoAnn were deeply devoted to each other and enjoyed 39 years of marriage until her death in 2008. Dick worked for Doskocil Foods in Jefferson for 36 years and retired as plant manager in 1998. Dick’s life calling was to serve people. He served his employer well, was deeply dedicated to his faith and church family, was a dedicated member of his community, and worked for the betterment of his wife, children, and grandchildren. A noteworthy quote sums up Dick’s life.. “Whatever you need… DONE.” and Dick meant it.
Dick has been a dedicated and active member of the community for many years, contributing his time and talents in countless ways. His involvement includes working at Riverfront Park in both the dugout and concession stand, serving more than 20 years with the Park and Recreation Commission, and holding a position as a board member for Greenwood Cemetery. He has also supported local athletics through the Lutheran League Booster Club and High School Football Booster Club. In youth football, he was one of the original board members who helped build and grow the organization from the ground up.
In addition to his community involvement, he faithfully served as a church council member at St. Mark’s for 14 years and has long been known as the church’s “jack of all trades” and trusted “Key Holder,” always willing to step in wherever help was needed.
He will also be remembered for his love of sharing a good story, his quick sense of humor, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His leadership, humility, kindness, and willingness to help others made him a respected and valued member of the community whose presence will be deeply missed
Dick is survived by: his son Greg Kassner of Johnson Creek, WI; grandsons Mike (Erin) Kassner of Fishers, IN, Seth Bloom of Noblesville, IN, and Zach (Amy) Bloom of Horicon, WI; and great-grandchildren Dillin, Brynn, and Maddox, whom he deeply loved and cherished. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, Stanley and Mary, wife JoAnn (Higgins), daughter Dianne Bloom, and siblings Marcella, Wencil, Ray, Leonne, Adaline, Don, and Stan.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, May 22, 2026, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Christopher Raiford presiding. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. He will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery following the funeral. A luncheon will follow the burial at the church fellowship hall.
