Edith DeFraties Obituary

Edith M. DeFraties, 89 of Jefferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at SSM St. Mary’s Care Center inMadison.

Edith was born on December 14, 1934, in Byron Township, the daughter of Ralph and Viola (Andersen) Steele.  On June 19, 1954, she married William DeFraties in the Methodist Church in Kenosha, WI.  The couple had 3 children and enjoyed 41 years of marriage until his death in 1995.  She was a longtime member of Immanuel United Methodist Church of Jefferson where she taught Sunday school, volunteered in the nursery, served as a greeter, and was a trustee on the church council.  Edith and her husband ran a grocery store in Indianford, WI for 6 years; worked for the former Jefferson Banner; for the Jefferson Bus Service; and was employed by the Jefferson School District.  She was a paid-up-for-life member of the Endl-GruennertCongressional Medal of Honor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3589 Ladies Auxiliary of Jefferson where she served as chaplain and served as president for 8 years.  She was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and was involved with the Koats for Kids program.  She was also a Girl Scout Leader.

She is survived by: her daughters Debra (Gordon) Lauder of Madison, and Dawn (Gary) Berge of Apache Junction, AZ; son Dean (Penny) DeFraties of Florence, SC; grandchildren Adam, Jessica, Sara, Kyle, Monica and Joshua; 3 great grandchildren; and siblings Clinton (Sandra) Steele, and Margaret Principe,both of Kenosha.  Edith is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Burton and Jack Steele, and brother-in-law Jack Principe.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, December 29, 2023, at Immanual United Methodist Church with Rev. Han Lee presiding.  Visitation will be on Friday from 10:00AM until the time of service at the church.  A luncheon will follow the funeral and she will be laid to rest at Milton Lawn Memorial Park in Janesville at 2:00PM on Friday.
