Dorothy E. Stengel

Dorothy Elizabeth “Dottie” Stengel, 95 of Jefferson, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Sylvan Crossings of Jefferson.

She was born on February 8, 1923, the daughter of Herman and Frances (Kraemer) Dickhoff and was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson High School.  After high school, she worked as an Operator for the Wisconsin Telephone Co. – achieving the position of Chief Operator.  She was very proud of this accomplishment.  Dottie married Harold Stengel on September 21, 1946 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jefferson. The couple enjoyed 45 years of marriage until his death in 1991.   Soon after marriage, she became a homemaker until 1970 when the couple purchased and ran the Jefferson Liquor and Sport Store.  They both retired in 1977.  Dottie was a long-time member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and she belonged to the Council of Catholic Women, Catholic Daughters, and was a volunteer at the St. Vincent De Paul Store in Jefferson for many years.  Dottie was a loyal Milwaukee Bucks fan, watching them religiously and attending games when she had the chance.  She also loved music, dancing, watching the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Dottie is survived by: Daughters Carol (Mike Burow) Gross and Ann (Dave) Piek both of Jefferson; Son-in-Law Tim Whiting of Coloma; Grandchildren Josh Gross, Mandy (Joe) Steies both of Jefferson, Lisa Mau of Delafield, Angie (Max) Clouse of Watertown, Tony (Lindsey) Piek of Madison, and Sarah (Darrell) Kitsembel of Lake Mills; 15 great-grandchildren; and Brother James “Duffy” (Nancy) Dickhoff of Jefferson.  She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Daughter Barbara Whiting in 2017, Grandson Jay Whiting in infancy, Sisters Ruth Connelly and Rose Nuedling, a Brother Walt Dickhoff, and a Son-in-Law Gordon Gross.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00PM on Friday, September 7, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Coyle presiding.  Visitation will be on Friday from 10:00AM until the time of service at the church.  She will be laid to rest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery following the service.
